I recently found a car for sale by an individual presented as a 65 GTO Convertible. The car has great potential for restoration but the VIN # 235675BXXXXXX does not correspond with what Pontiac Historial Society indicates as a real, factory GTO. Can anyone on this forum page advise me what model this VIN # indicates?

This car has all the correct badging inside and out, GTO grill, hood, rally pack gauges, 4 speed with PS and PB and a Pontiac 455 with 3 deuces. The engine obviously a transplant, was not running as the fuel line and spark plugs had been disconnected.

My understanding from PHS is that only VIN's beginning with the 4 digits 3727, 3737 & 3767 were eligible for the GTO option package for 1965. Please advise me if you have more info on this particular VIN#.
Thank You! Roqetman.

Based on information contained in the GTO Red Book by Peter C. Sessler, Chapter 2, 1965 GTO, page 13--

23727-2 dr coupe; 23737-2 dr hardtop, and 23767- 2 dr convertible

11,311 convertible GTOs built in 1965 car year

Note: the first digit typically refers to PMD and is a 2.

These number, IMO, support PHS's report to you.

My guess is you are dealing with a LeMans convertible that has been cloned to look like the option 65 GTO.
