I was reading Jim Hand's book on page 50 he talks about using a fuel pressure regulator for a performance modified qjet. This begs the questions what is it about a modified qjet that requires a pressure regulator and lower fuel pressure?

Out of curiosity I measured the fuel pressure of my oem mechanical pump and it fluctuates between 7 and 8 pounds. My engine is 1975 or 76.

Where there stock qjets produced that work with 7 to 8 pounds fuel pressure? Did some of the oem mechanical pumps have less presssure that 7 to 8? Does it have to do with year of manufacture?

I don't remember Pontiac having fuel pressure regulators factory installed but I could be wrong.

Your thoughts.

Only the early carburetors are fuel pressure sensitive, pre-1969 for Pontiac units, that used the large float and early hinge pin location.

The later carburetors are fine with high pressure, I run 7.5 psi on my 1977 q-jet, have now for several decades with zero issues anyplace......Cliff
