I got the 2011 schedule from GLD a few weeks back. I noticed that there was no BOP day on the schedule this year. I figured they might be tieing up a few loose ends and schedule it later, but it was not on the schedule by this AM. So I E-mailed Mike Angeli @ GLD asking why no BOP day. This is the mass E-mail he sent out today.-

"What happened to Ford, BOP & Chevy Days?"
A question I have been asked many times since the 2011 schedule was recently released is: Why is there no BOP, Ford or Chevy day this year? And how come Mopar Day is now Mopar Weekend?

I will just cut straight to the chase... Great Lakes Dragaway was founded by car clubs for car clubs. Mopar day has been hugely successful for years, because we always have at least one large car club to help us put on the event.

Ford, BOP & Chevy Days have not had such support in the last few years. No car clubs will step up and back the event. This is YOUR chance to change this!

Got a Mustang or Thunderbird club? What about a Cadilac club? I'll say it up front: we simply cannot assign entire days exclusively for under 200 cars... but, I can promise your car club will be given their own area in the pits on another day that is already shared with a smaller event or other car club!

Cmon folks... ANY day on the schedule except Nitrous Street Car Brawl, Real Street Drags or Larry's Funfest has room for car clubs of any size! Even weeknights! Many of our events already cater to specific car clubs such as Imports or Street Driven Cars.

Can you bring us 100+ cars to have a whole Saturday morning for your club? What about 200+ cars on an entire Sunday? Do you have your own car club and network with other similar car clubs? All of your network of clubs can band together to have an entire Ford, Chevy, or an Anything That Drives Day!

Motorcycles... Model T's?

We want em all!

Email me, Mike Angeli at mike@greatlakesdragaway.com, or Randy Henning at randy@greatlakesdragaway.com and let's do this. Your club doesn't have to race either - we have heavily discounted rates available for car clubs who just want to have a car show and hang out.

PS: Grudge Racers: we have room on nearly all Friday afternoons to open the track a few hours early if you would like to do your own race. You provide the cars and event rules, we will provide the track. Email me directly at mike@greatlakesdragaway.com

Not enough guys in the BOP community to have a BOP day? Not enough to have a Chevy day? (Not that I would go to that one). It was nice in years past to get together with the Pontiac guys at the track on a weekend day, without all the import guys buzzing around.
I hope this changes.

BOP day at GLD has had a drop off in attendence in recent years. I missed last year since my car was out of commision in '10. But I was there in '09 and it was weak, only a couple dozen Pontiacs and most left early because the Hod Rod Power tour made an impromptu stop around lunch time and it turned into a cluster f#$@. I only managed a few passes that day.

I remember goin in the early 2000's with my engine builder and saw more cool Pontiac rides than I would ever see in a day. It was a blast. It sucks that they pulled the plug but I'm not surprised. We'll still have to get together anyhow and try to get as many of our friends and local guys from this board for a day in May or June.

You didn't miss anything last year. Weather looked bad in the AM and scared most people away. I remember maybe 12 Pontiacs there. About 6 of those were a group of us that knew each other. Compare that to back in 07' or so when a group of us from a few websites got together at GLD on a WEEKnight, there was about 12-15 of us there.
Who's your engine builder?

Who's your engine builder?

His name is Ron Rocchi out of Morton Grove IL. He's been runnin a Pontiac engine building operation as a side buisness out of his garage for 45 years. He's a retired truck drivtrain mechanic that I met 13 years ago and I recall goin to his work as a 19 year old trying to get pointers and parts for my 79 formula. He worked at a tired old shop in the south loop area and I remember seeing another old timer asleep still clutching his cup of coffee while Ron was hard at work porting a set of Pontiac heads. He had an easy going employer that only kept the shop open long enough to let the guys retire and then closed in '02.

He's up there in age and no longer has the stockpile like he used to and his turn around time is almost a year. But I can say without a doubt that no one has built more Pontiac V8's in the state of IL than Ron. Here's some pics to get your Pontiac taste buds going

Hey you forgot about me lol.

Anyway most folks from ill including my self no longer go to union grove. The track was shortend by 20 feet at the start line to get rid of the incline and they couldn't extent the shut down area cause of the road. When byron opened up it took away a lot of union groves customers. and it closer and a better track.

TTT

Bowties are for Pee-wee Herman. "Chevy": even the name sounds cheap, but not as cheap as your Pontiac will be with an LS transplant.
