Hello fellas. Yes another question. What is a good traction setup for our 77 T/A? Traction bars or ladder bars? Its the 455 with a TH-400 342 rear gears.
Thanks again |

Paul, I hate traction bars on the street but understand that is just my personal preference. I have never found a set of traction bars that do not let me know they are back there during the course of normal driving.
If the suspension is dialed in and you are using sticky street tires such as a good drag radial, you shouldn't have much trouble.
I have always done the VSE mod on the rear spring eyes and also used their beefy shackles which have definately helped. Frame connectors made a tremendous difference as well. I like things that improve traction AND handling (or at least do not adversely affect handling in the process of improving traction). |

| what is the VSE mod? The only car I have had with traction bars was my 67 bird. it came with factory traction bars. out of curiousity my friend and I took them off to see if they really worked. with them off during burn outs the rear end jumped and hopped all over the place, so we put them back on, yea they worked, and well too!!! I would like to build the rear end so it doesnt hop around while grabing pavement, jegs and summit have ladder bars and traction bars and they say they are a must have and will work great, but we need input on this as well. why buy stuff that is not needed! |

I use the Jeg's lift bars. Fancy name for traction bars and they work. http://www.jegs.com/i/Jegster/550/41044/10002/-1
Lke Phil, I'm not crazy about them either. After I installed them, I had poly bushings installed in the leaf springs and the rear frame. I'm going to take the bars off one day and see if the wheel hop comes back.
There's a mod that you remove the front spring perches and drill a hole about 3/4-in higher (if I remember the measurement correctly) and open up the top of the perch for the spring eye. It is supposed to help eliminate wheel hop. The pinion angle needs checked afterward just to be on the safe side.
My 74 FBird had severe wheel hop with my ET Streets and auto tranny. First car I ever had with an auto that wheel hopped. The lift bars helped a lot with that. |

| Never ever had wheel hop on the street; but sure had it at the strip using sticky tires. (79 4 spd TA) |

| I agree with Brian. I had the South Side Machine lift bars. Jeg's lift bars are the same thing. They worked awesome. I did have to remove the stock rear sway bar. The Hotchkis sway bar did work with the lift bars. They are similar to traction bars but are mounted to the front of the spring unlike slapper bats. |

My Dad had those on his 57 Pontiac Star Chief, only they were called "Traction Masters" back then. He swore by them and said they completely cured all of his traction issues.
