Congratulations Ray. The new May '10 HPP arrived today, the Norwalk Pavement Pounders Shootout with his '69 Firebird turned out well.

Of interest, and a nice touch, was the car paired up with his for the feature. Both 455 based combos, in some ways they are similar and yet with enough contrast to make it interesting. Not paired up with a tubbed big Cat and a Butler 535. The other car was a nice '68 GTO.

Hey Ray, what a nice feature. Congratulations, very cool.

What I found interesting was reviewing the Strip Tuning Log. It is noted that your shift points were between 5000 and 5300 rpm. Considering the ET and speed, that's really showing some power at a very moderate (street) rpm. How many times do we see the same numbers from engines turning much higher rpm. I'm impressed. Well done.

Just want to add that your engine has more in it. Better traction will prove it.

Thanks guys!! The shootout was fun and we made a few changes throughout as stated in the article. The only "weak link" so to speak would be the cast rods and we've done a few no no's and shifted at 6,000 RPM's on a couple occasions but I DO NOT make a habit of that. The end result wasn't much different however and it wasn't at the shootout. I think the major difference between the GTO and our Bird was the cylinder heads which he is running the Edelbrock's and we have casting #62's.

The traction, or lack thereof is definately a determining factor in the 60' times being in the 1.7 range and we really need to get it figured out. The engine is putting down a lot of power and it just isn't getting to the pavement efficiently enough at launch as yet. I'm thinking about buying Cal-Tracs, or Southside bars this Spring to try and get things more consistant. The Bird is also going to have new feathers this year as we are getting away from the blue color. Thanks again guys.........Ray

Shift points, an interesting topic.

Setting aside the fact that Ray has stock rods installed for a moment. I read in High Performance Pontiac magazine material on how to determine the best gearing for the strip. Included in the formula was the point to use the RPM at the engines peak horsepower. The magazine features shift log indicated Ray's higherst shift point tried was 5300 rpm. I've got a gut feeling looking at his new engine combo with the ported heads and larger duration solid roller set up that his engine combo is making it's peak power above 5300 rpm. And from a article, to maximize the potential of any combo means keeping it in the power band as long as possible. Just reaching your peak power isn't enough you need to adjust your shift points so that you average the most power. Of course internals and valve train are a limiting factor.

Ray, I wish I could get back there this year and run you heads-up with my little 400. We would be neck and neck with our John Deere engines. Thats what all the guys I race with call my engine. Even had one of them give me JD hat with flames on it. I got a nice laugh out of that. I love the low rpm's. They will run forever.

Congrats on the writeup! I used to run the lift bars on my TA. I loved them. Worked great. It is such a good feeling to see your car in a magazine and people notice. Best of all they see you driving it like it should be. With your foot to the floor. I always go to the Pavement Pounders Shootout and read it first. Wish they would do an event like that her at Rt 66 in Il. I would apply. I did apply for Pinks All Out here in June. Now if 499 other people apply that run 11.50 I have a chance.

Ray, I will just have to see how much time I have built up at work. Fuel keeps creeping up too. I really want to get back there. It would be a blast. We are doing good here. Work is good but I have a boss like you have. Knows everything about everything. But we won't get started on that. LOL
