I bought a 26' tow trailer & I am trying to get more HP from my '94 GMC K1500 350 ! so far i have new cap & rotor new coil 8 mm msd wire's flipped air cln. lid over for more air, new Flowmaster catback duels & set timing from about 4 deg. after TDC (Calif. smog crap now in Idaho no smog crap)) to 2 deg. before TDC which made a great improvement! 210 HP is about all i can find on this engine so 30 or 40 more would help. any suggestion other than a new 400 HP engine which might be in the future ????
Thanks for any info !!!
Mike

Mike, what was the tow package for that GMC back in '94? Is there a difference possibly in rear gearing to make the initial pull to move the car with trailer a little better. A lower first gear may also have been an option in the tow package.

Hi Bill
the gmc is a 4x4 & i had it set up for towing with trans. cooler ect. i pulled a '74 21' Prowler & loaded the gmc pulled it like it wasn't there! maybe 4000# but then the truck ran great then the special smog station screwed it up !the new Cougar is 26' 2 slide outs & about 5700# still within GVW for towing !! like i sad i got the truck running better than ever but looking for some HP tricks like maybe true duel exhaust or get rid of the converter & gasket match the logs !! i put a Super chip in when i set it up top tow !!

Bill
with 178000 miles on the engine i am thinking about a 350 hp 383 stroker this spring ! that will do the trick, & better than 60-70 T for a new truck !!!

I do think the higher HP SBC crate engine is the way to go. Low end torque/hp is what you need. That 210 hp 350 SBC engine is similar to the one I had in my 4x4 Blazer and that 350 210 hp engine was an improvement over the little 305 it came with when the truck was new. That 305 engine was okay for towing light loads on flat ground, however, when it came to pulling up the long grades out your way, it was barely able to pull my trailer with TA. It was downright embarrassing. The 350 with 210 was better but the long grades made the engine work hard. It was a real strain. With an engine over 300 hp, your truck should be able to pull the larger Cougar trailer just fine. $5-7 grand is a far cry from 65,000.00 for new towing package.
