Hey Guys, I have recently changed powerplants on my 67 Firebird (from BBC back to Pontiac) and in doing so went from a 700R4 4 speed to a TH350 3 speed. My rear gear is like a 4.10, so it's a screamer out of the hole, but not much fun at 60mph. That all being said, I've been researching 10 bolt 8.5 swaps and the Nova thing is a great option (but getting harder to find!) But looking at my rear, the housing looks to be a 10 bolt 8.5 now, with the lower "ears". Short of pulling the cover off to see if it has the "C" clips for the axles, is there additional visual ways to determine?
Does anyone know if GM ever put an 8.2 carrier in the 8.5 housing? If not, I'm golden. As much as I love the smell and feel of gear lube, I'd rather not have to go that route. Thanks in advance!

F body 8.5?s can still have c-clips. The A body 8.5?s had bolt in axles.
8.2 and 8.5 carriers are not interchangeable, so no, GM never put an 8.2 carrier in an 8.5 housing.
Good article Steve, never knew about the measuring deal on the F body rear ends.

Thanks for the article! And the other responses. For clarification, I am under the understanding that the 8.2 had no "c" clips (I know the 8.5 does). My research also indicates that only the 8.5 has the 2 squared off "ears" on the left and right of the bottom of the housing (shown in my picture) and the 8.2 does not. Can anyone verify this? Has anyone seen an 8.2 with these ears?

As far as the ears go, yes, that?s one of the ways to ID an 8.5 but...
I?ve seen 8.5?s that look like 8.2?s and vice versa. I don?t make the call by sight anymore.
Example-I have an 8.5 in my shop right now out of a ?72 Cutlass. Looking at it most would guess it?s an 8.2 Chevy. I know it came out of a Cutlass though. I had to take a pic and send it to Jim at JD race to confirm it before I bought it. He said ?Yup,that?s a ?72 Cutlass rear, looks just like a Chevy 8.2,don?t it!? I had the resident rear end ?guru? on Chevelles.com swear it was an 8.2. The guts are all 8.5. Sometimes the guru?s make a mistake too.
If you don?t want to pull the cover I would send a pic to Jim at JD Race and Restoration and let him make the call.

I still can?t figure out why all my apostrophes come out as question marks!

Thank you 67drake (or should I call you the Riddler-lol) Question mark thing is funny. I will look JD Race up and see what he thinks. I'm guessing I'll have to pull the cover for the 100% definitive answer, but will hold off until Fall.

Conclusion! Jim at JD Race confirmed I have an 8.5"- which in hind site would explain the smaller chevy yolk. I'm guessing the previous owner of my "Bird" beat me to the punch and swapped in a rear from a Nova when installing a BBC. I think the confusion between the 8.2 housing and 8.5 housing comes when the 8.2 has "ears" that look like the 8.5, but actually have like a half-moon taken out. The 8.2 with no ears are obvious. Hope this helps others- that JD Race is a great resource if you're still foggy. Thanks 67Drake!

My 69 also has a Nova 8.5. It looks identical to yours. There is a code stamped on the axle tube that can identify it.
