Anyone know what attaches or purpose of threaded thru bolt on a 455 starter

To attach the starter support bracket too engine block. Engineers decided to support the starter at 3 points on most all GM V-Blocks. If there is detination or kick back on a hot restart, the starter nose cone or corner of the block may break off. Probably more of an issue back in the hi compression days.
Many times the bracket and heat shield is discarded on a starter replacement. Not advisable.
Even with headers in their way, I was able to install the bracket and shield on the red car.

Note/ probably millions of cars being driven without incident with bracket missing.
