I need to replace distributor on my 73 formula 400. Rock auto has Cardone Select hei 841891 for $86. Is it junk or is summit sum-850007 hei any better or is summit ready to run sum-850400 a better option. Or do I bite the bullet and go with DUI hei unit. Please give me some opinions because everytime I upgrade something on this car I take 2 steps backwards.

As far as I know, those DUI dist are the best coil-in-cap models made. But, if you can't swing $300, there are lots of cheaper alternatives.

There are cheap Chinese models on Ebay for less than $50. Some say they are absolute junk. Others say you can ad a better module & make a few other improvements, and get good service from them. So, I reckin it depends on who you ask.

There are several choices in the price range between the cheapies and the DUI.

Make sure you don't use the same ignition wire that went to your points type dist. They have a resister in them to reduce voltage. The HEI needs a full 12 volts.

I currently run stock dist with pertronix conversion. Dist cap wiggles around and unit seems to be a pos. Engine runs comp cam CL51-208 which yealds about 10" vacuum at idle. I do not like this cam. Heads are 4x but have been ported big time. Added Ross pop up pistons to up compression. Many other mods, some good some not. This is why I wonder what dist to run. Yes I want to go to a HEI unit and I know I will have to get new ing wires. I don't like how large the coil in cap HEI units are but if it will fit then ok.
