A couple of years ago my son and I flew to Alaska for a couple of weeks. My son was born there and had not been back since he was 3. We visited many areas and saw lots of the landscape. We also visited the Alaska Zoo which is located in Anchorage.

Watching the big grizzly bears was quite amusing. They were interested in resting...napping...simply minding their own business, quietly. However, the Alaskan ravens, a vocal and very arrogant bird had other ideas. Several flew into the large open area where the grizzlies were taking it easy. The ravens were vocal and cawed at them, they walked up to resting grizzlies and pecked at their backs...doing this carefully and scampering a few feet beyond reach, just to do it again and again. None of the grizzlies reacted like you think they would...each tolerated this juvenile, taunting behavior. Watching this act for several minutes, the ravens became a little frustrated because the bears were ignoring them. So, they became a little more aggressive. Instead of poking the grizzlies with their beaks, a couple of them went so far as to poke and jump on a grizzly. When that happened, the grizzly, a really big bear, moved his head and one of his paws. That led to more aggressive behavior by the gutsy ravens, taunting the bear more until the bear had had enough and got up. Now the birds, scampered away, not far, maybe 20 feet away. The big bear stood there for a few moments....and then dashed at the birds that were standing 20 feet away. This caused all of the ravens on the ground to take flight and head to high ground. The bear meandered over to a new location, plopped down to rest once again.

A similar situation is likely to happen in the Straits of Hormuz. The US Navy has ships in international waters in the Straits of Hormuz. Iranian fast patrol boats have taunted various US Naval warships a number of times, coming closer and closer, just like the ravens and the bears.

At some point, the US Navy will move, stand up, and chase these patrol boats, it's just a matter of time. I expect this will happen when one of the gutsy Iranian patrol boats gets too close and one of our Commanders reacts by destroying one, two or more patrol boats. Orders to not engage are "trumped" when the Commander honestly believes the safety of his ship and the service members aboard are at stake. Watch and see what happens in the upcoming weeks.
