I have a non working BOP OEM TH400 shortshaft that was destroyed by accidentally dropping into reverse at highway speeds. I also have a working Long shaft BOP TH400. My question is, can I take the "guts" out of the long shaft and transplant them into the short shaft?

Or can I just swap the tail shafts?

Yeah, I took the long tail TH400 from a '71 Safari wagon, to my trans guy. He swapped out the parts that made mine a long tail, and made it a short tail. So, unless some of those parts in your short tail were damaged, you should be able to make a good short tail, from the two. :)

If you'll be running a long stroke engine, make sure you put a 34 element sprag in the TH400. If it has the roller clutch in it, instead of the 16 element sprag, you'll need the drum from an older TH400 or the later 4L80E. There are usually several of these drum/sprag assemblies for sale on Ebay.
