My son Drake is finally leaving for USMC bootcanp tomorrow in San Diego. This is his dream come true. He had to go through lots of "red tape" to get the Marines to take him after a serious knee injury in a highschool football game a few years ago,but it all worked out.
Just wanted to post this,as I had mentioned it in other threads. I'm just proud of my 2nd Marine son!

"Little Drake" in the middle.

I was drafted in 1970 and was deferred because of bad knees from playing ball. Went back through Selective Service and challenged it in 1973 and won. That eventually allowed me to serve in the AF until retirement age. I'm glad I did that. It was the best years of my life.

The military tries to avoid taking in people who have injuries to joints because they become medically troublesome However, if you are whole when you get in and injure yourself while on active duty--they will patch you up etc--and keep you going unless the injury prevents you from performing your job. I'm happy to report that active duty medical and dental care was quite good during my career.

Drake you must be proud of having 2 genuine patriotic sons. There are many today that have little respect for military service. Semper Fi Drake!

CB,as Bill said they originally told him no,he couldn't join. He tore his MCL 2 years ago. He kept at it though, and got the ortho Dr.'s to pass him.
He supposed to go into Avionics,so his knees won't be a big issue doing that. His recruiter also told him he would be a good candidate for the "iron man" award at boot camp,as he is in better shape than most guys. We'll see how that goes.

Just got a note from my son at boot camp. He wrote that he came in FIRST place in his IST (initial strength test) in his entire Company! I'm guessing his Company is around 500 guys or more (my older son's CO was 528 guys). So now he is the Physical Training leader of his Company,as well as him being his squad leader. He hopes this qualifies him for a promotion, and he has a few guys signed up under him,in his name, already.
Am I bragging-YES! I mentioned above what great physical shape he was in,that's why it bugged me that it took him over a year to get the USMC to even accept him!

Drake--thanks for sharing that wonderful news with us. There's nothing wrong with positive information whatsoever. Nothing wrong with being a very proud and happy dad either!

Thanks Bill.
I don't want to come off as being a braggart when it comes to me,but I love seeing my kids do well so- I'll brag about them when they earn it.
BTW-did I mention that my older son came in 2nd place on the rifle range in his Company? The guy that beat him was his spotter!
Yes ,I'm bragging, but just because I'm proud of them! I hope they lead a better life then me.

My son is now training at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside CA. This is where my older son is stationed. Older son talked to younger sons DI'ers and they told him he is doing "outstanding". I guess the "guide" screwed up,so now my son is the new "guide" too,as the other was demoted. My older son said a guide is who the squad leaders report to,so he would basically be in charge of a platoon,But he was kind of vauge in his explanation. Can any one of you military confirm that is what this is? I've never heard of a "guide" before.

Got a letter this week. My son shot a 237 out of a 250 perfect score. The best score in his company was 244. So not TOO bad. I figured he would do OK as we are a gun shooting family.
He said he should graduate boot camp as an E3.
Again,bragging,-yes!

Thanks Bill and Doug.
Doug, let me know how your engine rebuild goes with Wayne.

Thanks Blued.
We just got home last night.
He did very well. His Company graduated about 480 Marines. He came in 2nd place for "ironman" award in his Company. Some guy from Kenya outran him by over a minute in the 3 mile run. Imagine that!

So he didn't graduate E3,just E2.

His Platoon-Squad leaders, platoon leader, and DI's are in the front row. My son is on the far left.
